  • Previous experience with school inspections, particularly with the KHDA framework.
  • Previous experience analyzing student achievement data.
  • Previous experience as a Head of the Department for English Language Arts, preferably at the secondary level. 
  • Previous experience teaching English Language Arts, preferably at the Advanced Placement level. 
  • Relevant teaching certificate or license. 
  • A completed apprenticeship or teaching experience. 
  • Practical experience with MS Office, Google Classroom, and other software. 
  • Dedication, patience, and the ability to remain flexible in various situations. 
  • The ability to answer sensitive questions and create an environment where everyone’s opinions are respected. 
  • A passion for English and a commitment to continuing education.

North American International School is searching for a qualified Secondary English Head of Department to join our team of educators. The head of the English department, or HOD, is responsible for leading and managing the English subject area, Grades 6 - 12, and ensuring high teaching, learning, and achievement standards. 

The head of an English department, or HOD, is responsible for leading and managing the English subject area and ensuring high teaching, learning, and achievement standards. 

Their responsibilities include:

  • Curriculum: Developing and implementing a challenging, flexible, and differentiated curriculum that promotes a love of English at all levels
  • Teaching and learning: Ensuring teaching and learning comply with standards and practices and supporting, monitoring, and evaluating practice
  • Staff: Managing staff performance, building effective teams, and developing other staff members
  • Students: Being accountable for student progress and attainment levels and providing data analysis to support student progress
  • Events: Organizing and running events to promote reading, writing, and speaking
  • Vision: Articulating, sharing, and ensuring the school's vision is understood and acted upon by the department
  • Assessment: Implementing an effective assessment framework
  • Professional development: Overseeing professional development for the department
  • Policies: Recommending departmental and district policies, such as course outlines, pacing plans, and grading scales
  • Promotion: Promoting the department and liaising with outside agencies 

The head of the English department position at North American International School is a teaching position.  In addition to department responsibilities, the English Department HOD would also be responsible for teaching a reduced schedule that may include AP Language and AP Literature. Additional employee responsibilities include but are not limited to, developing engaging, differentiated lesson plans and curricula based on the Advanced Placement curriculum as outlined by College Board and California State Standards, collaborating with teachers within the English department, providing timely and meaningful feedback on teaching practices, student assessments, and addressing student performance issues. Potential candidates should be able to teach students from varied cultural backgrounds at the Advanced Placement level. 2Qualified candidates with previous Advanced Placement experience and American teaching certification will be given top priority,
