Gen Z, Our Next Generation of Educators

Gen Z teachers are entering the workforce and are already shaking up the world of education. This episode outlines who Gen Zs are and the five key attributes this generation will bring to the classroom.

Episode Highlights:

Who qualifies as Gen Z? Gen Z represents those born between 1997 – 2012. Their ages currently range from 10 to 25 years old, which means they’re just entering the workforce, or will be in the near future.

While we can’t assume that these traits are shared by everyone in this budding generation, we can surmise that these traits are common amongst this age group based on the world they have grown up in.

The following 5 key attributes include unique skills and characteristics shared by the Gen Z age demographic which will help them to be incredible teachers.

  1. Gen Zs have grown up in an age of technology and this digital savviness will help them lead classrooms of their own. While the move to online learning and educational technology has been a learning curve for older generations of teachers, using technology is second nature to Gen Z teachers who have lived with technology their whole lives.
  2. Gen Zs typically prioritize inclusivity when entering the workforce. Their focus on prioritizing cultural awareness, social-emotional learning, and inclusivity helps to create a safe and inclusive learning environment for their students.
  3. Gen Zs brings a unique understanding of mental health, having grown up in a society that has become increasingly aware of mental health issues and supports. This deeper understanding of their students and the challenges they may be facing allow Gen Z teachers to be empathetic and supportive in a unique and powerful way.
  4. Gen Zs have prioritized activism in the workplace. While activism and school may seem disconnected from one another, schools are actually a place where youth are able to engage in learning about real-world issues in a safe and age-appropriate way. Since many Gen Zs care about contributing to a better world, the idea of teaching and influencing future generations often appeal to them.
  5. Gen Zs also have a great work ethic, which all teachers need to be successful. They are driven and action-oriented, which makes them great teacher candidates.

With their unique and various skillsets, younger teachers are able to bring fresh perspectives to the classroom and connect with their students in new ways.

As individuals and as teachers, it’s safe to say that the future of education is in good hands.
