KID’S COLLEGE is a private institute, best described as an English immersion school dedicated to teaching Korean children real and meaningful English skills. KID’S COLLEGE offers a school environment that is as similar as possible to that of an American or a Canadian school. While the majority of students are enrolled in kindergarten, KID’S COLLEGE conducts classes for children ranging in age from four to twelve. There are no Korean-speaking teachers, nor are Korean language materials used in KID’S COLLEGE classrooms.
Educational Philosophy of KID’S COLLEGE
To the degree that it is possible, KID’S COLLEGE is an English immersion school. All teachers are native English speakers and all classroom activities take place in English. In this way, students are given the opportunity to acquire real English skills through experience, as opposed to the memorization of stock phrases and responses. The KID’S COLLEGE program is successful because it emphasizes the need to make learning natural and play-like.
KID’S COLLEGE teachers are responsible for all lesson planning, creatively developing their own ideas, or utilizing those found in various resource books. Reflecting its particular educational philosophy, KID’S COLLEGE does not use step-by-step curriculum books. Instead, emphasis is placed on a particular approach to learning; one that recognizes the specific learning needs of children. This approach is known as whole language education.
Whole Language Education
Whole language is a philosophy of education that centers on the world of the child. It emphasizes the need to teach skills in context by creating an educational situation or experience that makes learning meaningful. By emphasizing the process of learning, whole language recognizes that learning takes place continuously and through many sensory channels. Children learn by seeing, hearing, and doing, and not as passive recipients of information. In this way, KID’S COLLEGE students learn by being active in their own education, interacting with the teacher and classmates, and with materials, literature, and the environment around them.
Learning in Context
Great importance is placed on learning through actual experience. This is why at KID’S COLLEGE, so much emphasis is placed on providing exciting activities for students. Language can then be learned in context and through meaningful interaction, rather than by directly instructional means. Children learn to speak English because they want to participate and make sense of the language teachers build around exciting activities. In this way, learning is more memorable and effective because skills are taught when students have a reason to learn them.
Verbal sharing of ideas
At KID’S COLLEGE, each morning begins with sharing time, giving students a chance to voice their views and opinions. At the same time, students begin to understand that listening is an essential component of spoken language skills.
Child Centred Learning
KID’S COLLEGE recognizes that children are natural learners. They seek to make sense of their world and do so in a natural manner, experimenting, and solving problems to add to what they already know. This point is emphasized by the preference of many researchers to state that children acquire, rather than learn language. In response, KID’S COLLEGE classrooms seek to provide a natural learning environment in which this active, constructive learning can continue and this natural curiosity for the world around them is encouraged. The primary task of KID’S COLLEGE teachers is to engage students and create a need for language by the richness of their interactions.
Health Care
KID’S COLLEGE provides all teachers with health insurance that covers the majority of costs incurred during visits to the doctor, including prescription medication. While this insurance is honored by the great majority of hospitals and clinics, teachers need to check in advance that their insurance will be accepted during their appointment. Dental insurance and optical insurance are not provided. Fortunately, dental work, eyeglasses and contact lenses are on average, considerably less expensive than in North America.
Housing
KID’S COLLEGE provides housing at no cost to teachers. Accommodations are single rooms OR shared (two teachers per apartment, each having his or her own bedroom). Teachers are responsible for all utilities, payable through KID’S COLLEGE.
The common area has kitchen facilities, refrigerator, gas stove, sink and cupboards. There is a washing machine and drying racks, and an air-conditioner in each apartment. A television and VCR are also provided. Each bedroom has a bed and clothes rack or closet. Bedding and pillow are also provided.
Vacation
KID’S COLLEGE teachers are entitled to vacation time as follows: one week in the summer, one week in the winter, plus 13-15 national holidays.
Teacher Training
Whenever possible, teachers will be provided with orientation. This is usually the teacher’s first working day, on which the teacher meets with experienced staff, observes classes and becomes familiar with KID’S COLLEGE teaching techniques.
Severance Pay
Upon successful completion of a one year contract, KID’S COLLEGE teachers will receive a one month salary as bonus.
Flight
KID’S COLLEGE provides return airfare for all teachers to and from Korea. Teachers are responsible for purchasing their own flights upfront. KID’S COLLEGE will reimburse the teacher upon arrival to Korea.
Working Hours
Teachers are responsible for working 120 hours/month. Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, teachers work from 10:00-18:00, while Tuesdays and Thursdays teachers work from 10:00-17:00.
